Orthodontics
It is a preventive and curative procedure that aims to solve problems of asymmetry or unevenness in the teeth and jawbone.
Using non-surgical treatments, the field of orthodontics can improve issues with dental health, aesthetics appearance, and speech.
The treatment doesn’t require the use of anesthetic or medication, and with the exception of certain cases doesn’t necessitate sculpting. Results appear over a period of time, where the treatment will align your teeth and jaw into perfection.
There are many techniques in the orthodontics field that can reposition the dental structures, your dentist will customize the most suitable treatment plan for you.
Types of orthodontics
There are numerous methodologies developed by doctors to provide appropriate treatment and solve health and aesthetic issues regarding dental irregularities and misalignment.
The two main categories of orthodontics:
1- Fixed Orthodontics:
Fixed braces are more effective in comparison to alternatives owing to their firmness, rigidity, and stability; which shortens treatment time. They are typically made from metals.
2- Removable Orthodontics:
This type is characterized by its ability to be removed and placed back as pleased. Removable braces facilitate the cleaning process and are more comfortable as they’re made of light weight materials.
Types Of Braces
There are currently many options for braces that cater to various aesthetic needs.
1- Clear Colored Traditional Braces
Traditional braces are structures that consist of metal wires connected to brackets. Every bracket is cemented on a tooth creating the traditional look of braces.
Nowadays the brackets can be made of materials that blend well with the natural colors of teeth.
For instance, ceramic brackets can be color-fixed or clear whereas the wire comes in a pearly color. This ensures that your braces don’t attract attention.
Traditional braces have the shortest treatment times compared to alternatives.
2- Aligners
Aligners fall under removable Orthodontics and come in the form of transparent trays.
To accommodate the movement of your teeth, you have to change your Aligners biweekly.
While you have the flexibility to remove them, you need to wear your Aligners for a minimum of 20 hours per day. This leaves room for you to remove them when eating or brushing your teeth.
Because many tend to not keep up with the demanding schedule and responsibilities of Aligners, treatment time is longer than with traditional braces.
3- Lingual Braces
Lingual braces are a good alternative for those who want the rapidity of traditional braces but the ambiguity of Aligners. Instead of the brackets being cemented on the front of the teeth, placement takes place on the inner side where they’re concealed.
How long is the treatment?
There is no standard treatment time. It’s a variable factor that alternates between patients. Some need a year, some two years, and others more.
But you can accelerate your treatment time by using a few products. These include:
AcceleDent
This is a tray that you use over Aligners or braces for 20 mins per day. The device can shrink treatment time by 30% – 50%.
Propel
This treatment requires professional assistance. Under local anesthesia your dentist places a thin probe into the bone in 3 different areas around the tooth.
The propel stimulates your bone tissue to respond faster to braces and move the teeth around towards the correct alignment.
Every treatment session is effective for a maximum of 8 weeks. Repeating treatment is optional.
Do I Need Retainers After Braces?
You will need retainers after braces to maintain your results. Most dentists recommend wearing retainers for the first 12 months after removing braces.
Retainers come in two different types: removable and non-removable. You can speak this with your dentist to find the best option for you.
