What Is a Gastric Bypass?
Gastric Bypass surgery is a surgical procedure, performed under general anesthesia, and takes between (2-4) hours. Whereby the size of the patient’s stomach is reduced, it works on attaching the upper part of the stomach and immediately diverting it to the small intestine, so the food will go only to the upper section of the stomach. Thus, when the patient eats a little amount of food, he will immediately feel full as if his stomach was filled with plenty of food.

Candidates for Gastric Bypass
Not everyone is suitable to undergo the Gastric Bypass operation, there are some conditions that must be met, and the most important ones are:
- Who is healthy and doesn’t have any medical conditions that caused this high weight.
- To be free from blood clotting problems, as they may lead to severe bleeding during the operation.
- A person who suffers from obesity-related health problems, such as osteoporosis, and cartilage melting.
- Who is healthy and doesn’t suffer from serious and chronic diseases; such as (heart conditions – blood pressure – diabetes – Anemia – and immunodeficiency).
Pre-Gastric Bypass Instructions
To ensure your safety, and to ensure success to the cosmetic operation, there is a set of instructions you need to follow; which are
- The patient must undergo some medical tests first, to make sure his/her health is good.
- Don’t eat or drink anything for (8) hours before the Gastric Bypass operation.
- Abstain from smoking a month before Gastric Bypass operation, as it affects Oxygen level which is crucial for the healing process.
- Refrain from natural blood-diluting drinks, such as; green tea, raspberry juice and pineapple.
- Abstain from all kinds of stimulants, two weeks minimum, as they prevent the anesthesia process.
- Abstain from all blood diluting drugs, such as; Ibuprofen, and Multi- Vitamine Group, for they contain (A,E), minimum two weeks before.
- Get used on exercises for a certain period of time before the surgery.

Post-Gastric Bypass Instructions
The doctor will dictate you a list of very important tips and instructions that you need to commit to, to get the best results, which are;
- Avoid eating immediately after the operation, start intake fluids; then gradually start eating, begin with pureed food for a while, then light food, and then the hard complex food.
- Take vitamins and mineral supplements, which include Iron, Calcium, plus Vitamin B12.
- Avoid doing any effort, or carry any heavy things, for at least a month after the operation.
- Abstain from smoking a month after Gastric Bypass operation, as it affects Oxygen level which is crucial for the healing process.
- Follow a healthy diet determined by a nutritionist, in order to get a healthy and balanced food that contains proteins.
- It is recommended to exercise, two weeks after the Gastric Bypass operation.
